The Texas Soil Archive
Since the onset of cooperative soil survey in Texas, pedologists at Texas A&M University and the TAMU Soil Characterization Lab have worked closely with the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to describe profiles and collect and analyze soil samples. When Dr. Aburto joined TAMU in 2021, he inherited this unique set of samples, and since then his team has been working on cataloging and organizing to create this precious archive of Texas's Natural History.
Currently, the archive has cataloged and geolocated over 7,000 samples distributed all over Texas. These samples are being actively used to study soil change derived from urbanization and land use intensification, and the history and fate of contaminants like microplastics or PFAS.

The Texas Soil Photo Archive
In 2025, we started gathering pictures of soil profiles and landscapes across Texas thanks to the donation of NRCS soil scientist Wesley Miller. We plan to expand this collection to include pictures of soil profiles with good location, description, and classification information to expand this database. If you have any historical or current pictures of soil profiles and landscapes with their descriptions you would like to contribute, please send an email to felipe. aburto[at]tamu[dot]edu.
